Discovering Hip Hop-1

Hip hop is not only about music. It also has elements of fashion, art, music and language. It developed in New York in the early 1970’s principally between African Americans and Latin Americans. Hip-hop dance denotes street dance styles chiefly performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It consists of a extensive range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. Hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces.

I like hip hop because it is a different dance as I have done unlike bollywood, classical and modern dance. From all the classes that I have joined earlier when learning hip hop I am also learning the basics of hip hop through theory and dance.

Groove is also called swing in a genre of music like hip hop. The different types of groove in hip hop are

  1. Up groove.
  2. Down groove.
  3. Bounce groove.

Up groove  is of two types the Wop and the Robocop. Wop has three variations mainly:

  • Single Wop.
  • Double up Wop and
  • Legs apart with Wop.

Down groove is of two types Steve Martin and smurf. The last groove bounce groove is of two types running man and Roger Rabbit.

It is interesting for a hip hop dance to not only learn the movements but also to have knowledge of what the moves are called. Nowadays very few dance classes teach the theory and only make dancers keep dancing.

For beginners, dancers can practise from the video .
